From Matisse to Frida Kahlo, Color Takes Center Stage at the Carrières des Lumières

Starting October 9th, the Carrières des Lumières invites you to discover two exceptional creations dedicated to two giants of twentieth-century painting, Henri Matisse and Frida Kahlo. An unprecedented dialogue between these two major artists, creating a bridge between the vibrant canvases of the master of color and the dreamlike creations of the Mexican artist.

As autumn gradually settles in, bringing cold and grey skies with it, why not treat yourself to a burst of shapes and colors? To do that, head to the Carrières des Lumières, which immerse us (quite literally) in the work of the king of the Fauves, Matisse. Between monumental projections, enveloping music and unique immersive staging, it's an exhibition you won't want to miss, enhanced by a short program dedicated to the unique painting of Frida Kahlo.


Matisse, undisputed master of color

When he begins to paint, in 1889, barely 20 years old, no one could have suspected that Matisse's career as a painter would be so long, and so prolific. Yet, on the verge of his 80s, he will still be in perpetual pursuit of new techniques and new ways to enhance color. It is this production of infinite richness

that the Carrières des Lumières are highlighting today in their new extended program.

For 45 minutes, the venue takes us through Matisse's color palette, showcasing all the power the painter infused into the different hues. One after another, each color becomes the expression of a feeling, until reaching a certain transcendence in the stained glass windows.

created by the artist and presented here in a sublime scene. Blue, yellow, orange, red, green, each shade becomes the reflection of a period in the painter's life, of an emotion or a message, in an obsessive and fascinating dance.


Frida Kahlo, undisputed queen of emotions

In a second phase, the Carrières des Lumières reveal to us the extraordinary work of the Mexican artist shaped by passion and freedom. Parallel to the main program, this second highlight presents itself as an intimate mirror, to discover the fascinating life of Frida Kahlo. Her early works, marked by physical suffering and the search for self, gradually give way to vibrant canvases, where the commitment and power of the artist burst forth. Before our eyes, organic, plant and anatomical motifs come alive, to illustrate theforce of this iconic figure who knew how to transform pain into poetry.
