One hour from Toulouse, in the tranquility of the Tarn, a landscape that looks more like Colorado than the southwest of France awaits you. Red dunes sculpted by erosion, ravines that change color with the light, and a vibe that feels like the end of the world, just 60 minutes from the Pink City. The dunes of Maraval are the least well-kept secret of the Tarn.

When France Plays the American Deserts
It’s all thanks to chemistry! The oxidation of iron in the soil has painted these lands a deep red that turns ochre when the sun shines and really lights up at the end of the day. The “rougiers,” which is the technical name for these geological formations weathered by time and water, have sculpted over the centuries a landscape of hills and ravines that strikingly resembles the grand vistas of Colorado or Monument Valley. But we’re right here in Tarn, just five kilometers from Cordes-sur-Ciel and an hour from Toulouse.
What You Need to Know Before You Go
A few practical details that make all the difference. First off, the site is private, it belongs to a...owners who allow visits on the condition that we respect the place and take our trash with us. This is non-negotiable, as such a fragile and rarely visited site deserves our utmost respect. Also, there is no water point on site (make sure to bring your water bottle, especially if you go in the summer). The end of the day is the best time during the warm season: the heat subsides, the colors explode in the soft light, and the photos are breathtaking. Lastly, if you want to make the most of your trip, Cordes-sur-Ciel is just five kilometers away! A beautiful perched medieval town that is worth the detour all on its own!
