The Occitanie region, with Toulouse as its main engine, is experiencing the highest demographic growth in metropolitan France. With an annual growth rate of 0.77% between 2016 and 2022, it is now closely following New Aquitaine. This attractiveness can be attributed to a positive migration balance, showcasing the region's appeal to new residents seeking quality of life and economic opportunities.

A booming metropolis

Beyond the city center, the urban unit of Toulouse, which encompasses the metropolitan area, has recorded an annual growth of 1.4%, reaching 1.8 million inhabitants in 2022. This growth makes Toulouse the French metropolitan area with over 500,000 residents that is expanding the fastest. In comparison, the Lyon metropolis had 1.43 million inhabitants at the same time. If this trend continues, Toulouse could officially become the third-largest city in France.
