A 70-year-old Dutch ornithologist unwittingly became the "patient zero" of a hantavirus epidemic after a trip to Argentina. Before boarding a cruise ship, he had visited a dump to observe rare birds. Just a few days later, he passed away, and the virus began to spread on board. In light of this incident, American doctor Steven Quay listed several common travel mistakes that can expose travelers to serious illnesses.
10 Travel Mistakes to Absolutely Avoid
1. Exploring caves filled with bats
Bats can carry dangerous viruses like rabies, Ebola, or certain respiratory diseases. Caves, tunnels, and mines are particularly risky.<
2. Eating some "exotic" local specialties
Monkey meat, bats, rodents, or wild animals: behind culinary folklore, you might find a real health gamble.
3. Birdwatching near dump sites or rat-infested areas
The danger mainly comes from dust contaminated by animal droppings. This is precisely what may have contributed to the recent hantavirus outbreak.
4. Sweeping out an infested shed without protection
Sweeping out rodent droppings can send viral particles into the air. Experts recommend a wet cleaning with a mask and disinfectant instead.
5. Swimming in stagnant freshwater
10. Ignoring a fever after traveling
If you experience a fever, cough, diarrhea, or rash after a trip, it's important to see a doctor right away while detailing your activities during the journey.
