Every year during the summer, dozens of Roman legionnaires invade the town of Rieux-Volvestre, just 40 minutes from Toulouse, to set up their camp right in front of the village. This unmissable event is a true living history lesson that delights families and enthusiasts alike. Jean-Luc Blanchard, founder of the Archeosite, mentions to Actu Toulouse : « The camp will be set up just like it was back when the legionnaires would construct it in 3 hours. »
A military camp more real than life
An exciting gathering where visitors can admire the meticulous reconstruction of a Roman military camp, featuring a command tent, war machines, and military demonstrations. But wait, it’s not just the warrior aspect that’s in the spotlight. Jean-Luc Blanchard is thrilled: « The warrior aspect is... is a must-have, but we want to showcase something else. »

Everyday Life and Know-How of the Era
In addition to demonstrations of Gallic craftsmanship, the Roman legionnaires showcase their skills and daily organization. The idea is to illustrate how life unfolded in a camp: from military discipline to moments of leisurely sports. For the younger ones, a workshop about the maneuvers of the legionnaires will be offered for children aged 4 to 14.

A soon-to-be permanent adventure?
Although this event only lasts for a weekend, it might just become a year-round activity. Jean-Luc Blanchard, a history enthusiast, has ambitious plans: “In the future, we want to present it to school groups throughout the year.” With a polished and revamped Roman village, the Gaulish Village could offer a unique educational experience showcasing the grand epics of Julius Caesar and the conquest of Gaul.
