This Sunday, November 3rd, Strasbourg saw 500 participants parading in their underwear through the streets for a unique 5-kilometer run. The goal? To raise awareness about the fight against male cancers as part of Movember, a month dedicated to screening for prostate and testicular cancers. Named "Le Strasbourgeois", the event gives a nod to the Strasbourgeoise, a well-established race against breast cancer.
Small outfits to support a big cause
Carried by a lighthearted tone, this initiative was designed to break the taboos surrounding male cancers. "We wanted to break the mold and leave a mark," explains organizer Hugo Undreiner in comments shared by France Bleu. Indeed, running in your underwear in the middle of November has helped draw attention to the issue while conveying a message of solidarity and urgency: screening for male cancers is essential. Because it’s good to remind...
Let’s remind everyone that prostate cancer is far from trivial, as it claims around 8,000 lives each year.
A Duo Race
The event was run in pairs, symbolizing the essential support needed for men’s health prevention, which is often overlooked. "Women regularly see their gynecologist, but men often hesitate to visit a urologist," explains Undreiner. This lack of consultations is a public health issue, as prostate and testicular cancers, when detected early, can generally be treated very well.
Fun, supportive, and relaxed, the Strasbourg Race in Underwear has succeeded in its goal: reminding everyone that screening is essential for saving lives. See you next year for another race and even more supportive underwear!
