A name that evokes history and charm. Nestled between European institutions and the winding paths of the Ill River, this 26-hectare green oasis is a little gem from the 18th century. People come here to lay on the grass by the water, admire the artificial waterfall, and have fun counting the storks that have made their home in the trees nearby.

It offers a blissful, almost timeless escape. This is a spot that the people of Strasbourg know well. Surrounding the eponymous castle, which looks like it’s straight out of a Rhineland fairy tale, you’ll find discreet lawns, woodland paths crisscrossed by dirt trails, and contemporary art pieces tucked between centuries-old trunks. Having a picnic here is a fantastic experience: a blanket, some sausage, a good bottle of wine, and the feeling of dining in an open-air museum. If you keep an eye out, you might just spot “Il Bosco Guarda e Ascolta,” a forest sculpture that seems to watch you from between the trees...

Unique in its kind, this park symbolizes Franco-German friendship, stretching across the Rhine. Just cross the Europe footbridge, with its decidedly contemporary design, to change countries. On one side, the vast lawns of Strasbourg, and on the other, the green spaces of Kehl. It’s the perfect spot for those looking for a unique setting to enjoy a beer while watching the barges go by.

What was once a fortress designed by Vauban has transformed into an urban park where military history meets urban wildlife. It’s easily accessible from the center, and once you’re there, you’ll be charmed by the remnants of the ramparts, the moats turned into canals lined with reeds, and the green spots that invite you to sit and watch mallards and freshwater turtles soak up the sun. It’s one of the few parks in Strasbourg where you can still feel the memory of the stones beneath the weight of wild grasses. A soothing place, perfect for a post-meal nap between your holiday reads.

More central and often overlooked, the garden in Place de la République is a bubble of calm right in the heart of Neustadt. This circular garden, surrounded by impressive imperial-style buildings, adorns itself in spring with magnificent magnolias and then in autumn with golden ginkgos that seem to be on fire in the setting sun. You can settle on a bench, between the beeches and the memories of an imperial past, to enjoy a slice of tarte flambée bought to-go or simply to chat about the world with a friend. Bonus info: the four monumental ginkgos that stand there are a gift from the Emperor of Japan. Quite something!
