The famous Foire Saint-Jean, a must-see event at the start of summer in Strasbourg, won’t return until 2027. The City confirmed this on Tuesday, December 3, 2024, stating that, due to a lack of suitable land and sufficient resources, the event cannot be organized until the completion of construction at the Plaine des Bouchers site, which is expected in three years. “The City of Strasbourg is no longer able to organize a temporary site because of the financial situation and the shortage of available land, so the Foire Saint-Jean will resume after the works in its usual format,” an official statement clarified.

No fair for another three years

This unprecedented decision in the multi-century history of this fair has sparked strong reactions. Pierre Jakubowicz, an opposition municipal councilor, has sharply criticized the Mayor of Strasbourg, calling for “finding a temporary solution.”

Before the delivery of the festive fair. On the side of the fairground operators, the disappointment is immense: “I am shocked, we had no choice”, laments an operator who was contacted. The cancellation represents a significant loss of earnings for this already fragile profession…

A fair ready to return despite the bans

However, the future of the fair remains uncertain. According to Actu Strasbourg, the lawyers for the fairground operators, Olivier Le Maillou, assured that the 2025 edition will take place “whether with authorization or not, even if we have to come by force.” This statement highlights the growing tension between the fair operators and the municipality, hinting at a showdown over the future of this beloved tradition.
