Gone are the days of littered sidewalks and flying papers like confetti: Strasbourg is embracing a "zero tolerance" approach against litter! Starting this July 2025, a new fine system is coming into play, and let’s just say it stings a bit more than the nettles in a neglected park. The price? 135 euros for an unpicked dog poop, just like for a tossed cigarette butt or chewing gum on the ground. Yes, that seemingly innocent little act could now cost you as much as a well-boozed dinner.
Zero Tolerance for Dirt and Incivility
And it doesn’t stop there. For household waste thrown in public spaces – be it a bottle, packaging, or paper – the bill skyrockets to 200 euros. The goal is clear: to hold residents accountable and help them understand that public spaces are not open dumps. Strasbourg is applying the old principle of "the polluter pays," with a twist!
The real cost of waste management comes with its penalties. And for those who might think it's fun to dump hazardous products (like solvents or asbestos) in a green space or natural area, the bill can skyrocket to an astonishing 15,000 euros. Yes, you read that right. To tackle incivility, the city relies on its 330 urban cleanliness agents, out on the streets as early as 5 a.m. Every year, 10,000 tons of waste are collected from public spaces. So yes, this new policy may seem strict. But if it can help us avoid sidewalks that look like minefields and gutters that resemble waste festivals… honestly, we’re all in.
