Every year, UNESCO awards the title of "World Book Capital" to a city that celebrates reading to fight illiteracy. UNESCO and the Advisory Committee of the World Book Capital were impressed by the commitment of Strasbourg, which highlights books as a way to address the challenges of social cohesion and climate change. It is thanks to the project entitled "Reading our world" that the city received the UNESCO World Book Capital label. Strasbourg was also praised for its literary heritage and its projects aiming to intersect literature with other artistic disciplines, such as music.

24th city to win the title

Throughout the year, a plethora of events, conferences, and meetings around books and their players will be on the agenda. According to France Bleu, Strasbourg, the eighth city in France, has become the world capital of the book until April 2025, a first for a French city. Anne-Marie Bock, the Project Manager of "Strasbourg World Capital of the Book UNESCO 2024" explains to their microphone that "this is a label that circulates between continents and also allows to show the diversity of situations, cultural offerings, and reading offerings in different countries". She also adds that “Strasbourg stands out because it is not the capital of France, which is quite unique because most book capitals are also capitals of the countryFrance Bleu
