Like every year, the association "Cities and Villages Where Life is Good" has revealed its ranking of French municipalities, based on 190 criteria divided into 11 major categories: quality of life, safety, health, transportation, shops and services, education, environmental protection, local finances and taxes, community support, sports and leisure, as well as real estate attractiveness. For 2025, the three most determining themes have been quality of life, safety, and health, key elements that significantly weigh in the balance.

In 2024, Strasbourg held the 19th place in the rankings. But this year, the Alsatian capital has dropped again and finds itself relegated to 27th place. This notable decline raises questions: what explains this slowdown? Several factors could be at play, but the environment and air quality seem to be particularly sensitive issues. Strasbourg is among the most polluted cities in France, with the main sources of pollution being heavy road traffic, especially from diesel vehicles and wood heating, which significantly contribute to fine particulate matter and nitrogen dioxide emissions. The city's geographic location, nestled in a plain with little wind, also encourages the stagnation of atmospheric pollutants.

Despite ongoing efforts (low-emission zones, development of mobility options,Softening, greening urban spaces), the results are slow to appear. To regain our places next year, it's essential to double our efforts in this area. If Strasbourg is slipping in the rankings, it might be because other cities and villages have been more proactive and ambitious in their environmental programs. So, let’s get moving!
