The Oslo architects firm is no stranger to the Wacken area. After leading the works for the Osmose project, the Strasbourg-based firm has just won the competition for the restructuring and expansion of the European School of Strasbourg. What sets Oslo architects’ project apart from a simple functional extension is the intention that runs through it from start to finish. The phrase they use, "school in the forest," is not a marketing slogan: it’s a project philosophy that translates into every architectural choice.
7,241 m² designed to live in harmony with nature
For the new primary school in particular, the restructuring aims to develop what Oslo calls an "open ecosystem": maximized natural light, gardens integrated into student circulation, and outdoor spaces designed as extensions of the indoor environment.
elements of classrooms rather than as playgrounds. An approach directly inspired by "outdoor schools," this educational movement uses the natural environment as a complete learning tool.4 levels and a green roof
Technically, the project includes a ground floor plus three levels, topped off with a green roof on the fourth floor. The extension represents 4,850 m² of new surface area, bringing the total to 7,241 m² of usable space. An activity room and a sports field complete the program. The budget for the operation amounts to 16.9 million euros, jointly funded by the State, the City of Strasbourg, the European Community of Alsace, and the Grand Est Region. Construction will begin in September 2026, with expected delivery by the end of 2029.
