Just a stone's throw from the cathedral, "Au Fond du jardin" may be living its final days in its lovely green version. Frédéric Robert, the leader of this Strasbourg institution, has just learned that his beloved green haven, nurtured for 25 years, could disappear in the name of urban uniformity. 

Even when the thermometer flirts with zero and nature takes a nap, the little garden on Rue de la Rape continues to shine with its terrace and its unique garden. Here, you can find around forty carefully tended plants, a virgin vine that changes its dress with every season, birdhouses where birds have made their homes, and white wrought iron furniture arranged with a taste that recalls English gardens. “Au Fond du jardin” is the perfect antechamber for what awaits visitors inside: a Victorian-style tea room where one can enjoy travel madeleines and where British tea time truly comes to life.

When Demineralization Turns into a Green Nightmare

On paper, everyone agrees. The City of Strasbourg wants to demineralize the space in front of three businesses in the area: "Au Fond du jardin", Hôtel Suisse, and Bistrot & Chocolat, and also set up...A new paving with water drainage. Awesome, right? Except the project hides a detail that makes Fred upset: it's impossible to keep his plant customization, our colleagues from DNA explain to us.

No more potted plants, no more winter gardens, no more 25 years of patience and meticulous pruning. The idea of replanting his greenery in the ground has met with a firm refusal... The City made it clear that there would be no “personalization” in front of his shop. The key word? Uniformity. The style? Minimalism taken to the extreme.It’s a topsy-turvy world for this manager who sees over 200 people passing by his shop every day, camera in hand. What will happen to his pink laurels, his English roses, his boxwoods, and that famous Virginia creeper that dresses up the facade?

General Mobilization on Social Media

Faced with this threat, Fred didn’t just sit back and do nothing. On February 7th, he posted an alarming video on Instagram and Facebook to rally his supporters. And it’s working: messages of support are pouring in from all over the world. The shopkeeper has even reached out...te; the candidates for the municipal elections to position themselves on the issue.Great news, though! The municipality visited him in his store following the publication of the initial article and officially responded by stating that "nothing will happen without" the boss. Stay tuned for updates.
