Since its construction after the war, the Europe Bridge has witnessed millions of cars, trucks, and bikes traveling between Strasbourg and Kehl. But today, its condition leaves much to be desired. The structure, built at a time when cars were a rarity, can no longer support the 26,000 vehicles that cross it every day. On top of that, recent renovation work hasn’t been enough to extend its lifespan: it’s time to turn the page!
A project that has unanimous support
And for once, everyone is on the same page! The Eurometropolis of Strasbourg (EMS) and the German authorities have approved a study agreement to lay the groundwork for the future structure. With a budget of 500,000 euros, these studies will determine what this 2.0 bridge will look like.

A 30 Million Euro Construction Project
This renewal is largely about safety. With constant overload and the effects of climate change on its materials, the risks keep increasing. And God knows this new bridge is going to cost us dearly! For now, the bill is estimated at 30 million euros. The French government could pitch in through the State-Region planning contract, a proposal backed by advisor Philippe Maurer (LR). As for the mayor of Strasbourg, she is ready to explore all avenues, including European co-funding.
So when will this new bridge finally come to life? Well, between studies and securing funds, we're looking at a wait of about ten years before we can use it, so hang tight...
