Up to 33°C in Strasbourg: a powerful "heat dome" is making temperatures rise!

It's a pretty surprising phenomenon that has taken over part of France since this Thursday, May 21. Indeed, over the weekend, we're seeing a rise in temperatures on a continental scale, exceeding seasonal norms by 10 to 15°. And let me tell you, at the time of the Ice Saints, it's quite funny to pull out the sandals, shorts, and caps again. However, this weather change can be explained in a completely rational way.

A wind coming straight from the south

Once again, just like every time we talk about the weather, it's all about the wind. In fact, a flow of warm air coming from Morocco is currently sitting over France. Just like that, this...the heat wave gets trapped under the high pressures of a powerful anticyclone. We don’t really understand all those technical terms either, but the moral of the story is that these phenomena cause the creation of a “heat dome”, leading to a sudden spike in temperatures over the coming days. Essentially, the anticyclone acts like the lid of a pot, trapping the warm air and making the temperature rise higher and higher, resulting in record-breaking weather across the country.

A Beautiful Weekend Ahead

In Strasbourg, the thermometer will be hovering around 30°C and will stay that way until the end of next week. And to make it even better, not a single cloud will spoil this exceptional weather, giving us a little taste of summer and especially letting us dry off after weeks of relentless rain. Plus, it will be a great training for the future, as experts agree: against climate change, these heatwaves are bound to become more and more frequent in the coming years.
