A site full of history and mysteries
The Lake of La Maix, perched at 678 meters above sea level and covering 1.6 hectares, is not only a peaceful haven for nature lovers, but also a place rich in history. On its shores stands a chapel built on the ruins of a 11th century hermitage. Next to the chapel, a mysterious stone sarcophagus intrigues visitors. The origins of this artifact remain unknown, adding an additional layer of mystery to this already captivating place. It's no wonder it is part of our top 10 most beautiful lakes to discover around Strasbourg.
Legends to Give You Chills
The Lake of Maix is the setting for several fascinating legends that feed its mystical aura. The most famous is that of the Devil Violinist. According to this legend, a diabolical musician would enchant the young villagers with bewitching tunes, turning them away from their faith. As divine punishment, the meadow where they danced was engulfed, forming the lake. It is said that, at times, lamentations still echo from the depths of the lake.

Another intriguing tale is that of the Black Virgin of La Maix. It was believed that this sacred figure could briefly bring back to life stillborn children to baptize them. A controversial custom that was eventually banned by ecclesiastical authorities in the 18th century, deemed pure deception.
