Just a short two-hour trip from Strasbourg, Esslingen am Neckar looks like something straight out of a fairy tale with its cobblestone streets, perfectly preserved half-timbered houses, and a medieval atmosphere that takes you back several centuries...

This gem in the Baden-Württemberg region is often overshadowed by its neighbors like Stuttgart, but that's exactly what makes it so charming. Less crowded, more authentic, Esslingen is the perfect spot if you want to discover a little piece of Germany not far from Strasbourg!

Over 200 half-timbered houses

With more than 200 half-timbered houses, some dating back to 1262, Esslingen is just adorable. We recommend visiting Marktplatz, the vibrant heart of the city. For an unbeatable view, take a stroll to the old fortifications surrounded by vineyards: up there, Esslingen Castle and its iconic "Grosse Tour" offer a breathtaking panorama of the city and the surrounding hills!

But wait, that's not all ! When we say this city is a real gem, we're not kidding ! Here, since we’re so nice, we’ve even made you a little list of must-visit places :

Villa Merkel, a contemporary art gallery that offers surprising exhibitions in a stunning setting.

Esslingen Museum, to learn more about the region's rich history.

Wolfstrurm, the oldest defensive tower in Esslingen.

Grünanlage Maille, the largest park in the city.

A medieval Christmas market you simply must try

If during the holidays you feel like changing things up a bit from the traditional Christmas market...

In Strasbourg, we highly recommend this destination during the holiday season. Indeed, in December, the city transforms into a medieval village for its famous Christmas market. Besides the traditional chalets, you'll find artisans in period costumes, musicians, fire breathers, and even mead served on a skewer (incredible!).

Oh yes, also (it just keeps getting better) before you leave, you absolutely must try their local specialties. It's almost an order, or you'll truly regret it! Among the gems the city offers, there are 2 you definitely have to taste: the Maultaschen (Swabian dumplings) or the Zwiebelrostbraten (beef roast with onions). On the beverage side, make sure to stop by Kessler Sekt to bring back some bottles of this delicious sparkling wine. Trust me, you’ll thank us later!
