The renowned Shanghai ranking, which distinguishes the world's best universities each year, has just unveiled its 2026 edition. Among the 1,000 institutions selected, 27 are French, and the University of Strasbourg ranks between 101st and 150th place worldwide.

Strasbourg maintains its place on the international university map. Published on Saturday, August 15, 2026, the Shanghai ranking this year lists the world's 1,000 best universities. France counts 27 institutions and climbs to 10th place worldwide in the number of universities represented. The University of Strasbourg maintains its position in the 101st-150th best in the world bracket, and at 5th place in France.

With over 55,000 students, including nearly 2,000 doctoral students and 13,000 international students, Claude Bernard Lyon 1 University appears once again in the

This year, Shanghai ranks it in the 101-150 range, with universities beyond the 100th position grouped by brackets rather than ranked individually. It's therefore impossible to say that Strasbourg is precisely 101st, 125th, or 150th: it belongs to this group of around a hundred institutions. 

27 French universities among the top 1,000

On the national level, France holds an impressive position in the rankings with 27 institutions classified and 4 universities in the top 100. Paris-Saclay leads the French rankings at 13th place globally, ahead of PSL, 33rd, Sorbonne University, 55th, and Paris City University, 57th.

France thus ranks 10th globally in the number of institutions present and 4th worldwide for the number of universities in the top 50, tied with Switzerland, Japan, and Germany. Two institutions are also making their debut: University of Western Brittany, for the first time, and the Universitfrom Angers, which returns to the ranking after several years of absence.

Harvard remains the world's best university

At the very top of the ranking, American and British institutions continue to reign. Harvard holds the top global position, ahead of Stanford and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Cambridge, Berkeley, Princeton, Oxford, Columbia, the California Institute of Technology and Chicago round out the top 10.
