Every Tuesday morning, the humanist city of Sélestat transforms into an open-air theater where, for nearly 700 years, the most beautiful scenes of daily life have unfolded: the producer offering his fresh vegetables of the day, the cheesemonger slicing with love, or the tourist discovering the delicious flavors of Alsatian cuisine with wide eyes. This gem in the heart of Alsace is a blend of history, culture, and friendliness. And this year, it officially enters the race for the title of the most beautiful market in France, as part of the competition launched by the 1 PM news of TF1 and the Dernières Nouvelles d’Alsace.
An enormous market of 150 passionate vendors
Sélestat, nestled between Strasbourg and Colmar, has nothing to envy from its larger market-sisters. It has always had a taste for the land, for good things, and for vibrant traditions. Since the end of the 14th century, the city has pulsed to the rhythm of its weekly market. Suffice to say, here, we don’t do things half-heartedly: Every Tuesday, nearly 150 merchants fill the streets with their ultra-fresh products and contagious smiles. Fruits, vegetables, meats, cheeses, crispy bread, home-cooked dishes, handmade creations, and vibrant bouquets: the selection is as rich as it is appealing, catering to all tastes and budgets.
This market is also a true moment of life: you stroll around, chat with friends, run into your neighbors, and simply enjoy yourself. In the summer and at Christmas, it even becomes one of the must-see events for tourists wanting to experience authentic Alsace. So yes, we might have a soft spot for Sélestat, but honestly, with so much charm and history underfoot, who could compete?
