Visiting our beautiful Breton city? Or just on the hunt for a delicious treat from Rennes? Don’t worry, you’re in the right place. We present to you the 10 specialties of Rennes to try at least once in your life!

The galette-saucisse

An iconic symbol of Rennes' gastronomy, the galette-saucisse is a typical snack you’ll find at every street corner, especially during football matches or festivals. It consists of a grilled sausage wrapped in a soft buckwheat galette, often served plain or with a bit of mustard. Simple, but delicious!

The Kig ha farz

Originally from Finistère, this dish has been embraced by the people of Rennes over time. Kig ha farz is a traditional Breton stew made of meat (beef, pork), vegetables (carrots, cabbage, potatoes), and farz, a kind of buckwheat or black wheat porridge cooked in a cloth bag. It's a comforting family dish, often served on special occasions.

The Breton Cake

While the galette-saucisse is savory, the Breton cake is the king of sweet treats from Rennes. This dense and melting cake, made with salted butter, flour, and sugar, is often filled with prunes or salted butter caramel. It’s perfect to enjoy with a coffee or tea, or simply as a delightful snack!

The Far Breton

The far breton is a type of thick flan, traditionally made plain or with prunes. This dessert, reminiscent of a clafoutis, is soft and wonderfully melting. Its firm yet tender texture makes far breton one of the region's most cherished desserts.

Crêpes and Galettes

In Brittany, you can't escape the delightful crêpes and galettes made from buckwheat! Galettes, often filled with cheese, ham, or eggs, are a must-have at meals, while sweet crêpes are served for dessert, topped with salted butter caramel, chocolate, or jam.

The Cotriade

Though more commonly linked to the Breton coast, cotriade—a traditional Breton fish soup—can also be found at some lovely restaurants in Rennes. This classic dish made with various fish, potatoes, and sometimes mussels is a Breton cousin of bouillabaisse.

Le Petit Beurre

The people of Rennes can be proud of their dry biscuits, especially the Petit Beurre! Made in Rennes for generations, this delicately buttery biscuit is often enjoyed with coffee or used in dessert recipes.

Le Pommé

Not well-known outside the region, le pommé is a sweet specialty made from apples and cider juice, cooked slowly for hours. The result? A sweet and thick paste with a rich, caramelized flavor. It's usually enjoyed with bread or pancakes.

Le beurre salé

Salted butter is a treasure from the Rennes region. You'll find it in many Breton specialties, like salted butter caramel, crepes, or simply spread on a slice of fresh bread.

Le Chouchen

To accompany these delicious dishes, chouchen is the drink you absolutely must try. Made from fermented honey, it has a fruity sweetness and a delightful taste.
