The four Breton departments will gradually move to orange alert status, with gusts potentially reaching 140 km/h along the coast. Disrupted transport, strong waves and risk of falling trees: here's what you need to know before this weather event arrives.
Brittany placed on orange alert from 10 p.m.
A serious wind event is brewing over Brittany. Under the effects of depression Austen, weather conditions will significantly deteriorate on the evening of Thursday, October 22nd and throughout Friday night. According to forecasts from Météo-France, three Breton departments will be the first affected by orange alert for violent wind: Finistère, Côtes-d'Armor, and Morbihan. Ille-et-Vilaine will then join the alert system during the night, as will the Manche department in Normandy. All of Brittany will therefore be affected by this particularly intense windy episode.

Gusts of up to 140 km/h along the coast
The forecasts are truly impressive! Météo-France is predicting gusts that could reach 100 to 110 km/h inland, while coastal areas could experience peaks between 130 and 140 km/h. The Breton coastline will therefore be particularly exposed, especially in areas most open to the winds. This episode, described as strong and stormy, could result in falling branches or trees, disruptions on roads, and localized power outages. Caution will be especially recommended when traveling, particularly during the night from Thursday to Friday.
A risk of strong waves along the Breton coast
Wind won't be the only consequence of depression Austen. Weather authorities are also monitoring sea conditions, which could become particularly rough along the Breton coasts. An orange alert for waves and storm surge isn't ruled out in the departments of the n
edge of Brittany. Walkers are therefore advised to avoid dikes, piers, and areas directly exposed to waves during the episode. Even when the spectacle of the waves is impressive, conditions can become dangerous in just a few moments.Additional trains canceled Friday morning in Brittany
Another significant consequence of this weather deterioration: rail transport should be disrupted. In anticipation of violent winds, train service will be interrupted on certain Breton lines on the morning of Friday, October 23rd. These preventive measures aim notably to avoid accidents linked to falling trees or branches onto the tracks. Travelers planning to take the train on Friday are invited to check their service status with SNCF before heading to the station.
Other French regions could be affected
After hitting Brittany, depression Austen should gradually shift northward over the course of Friday. Météo-France does not rule out an extension of theorange vigilance to other departments, notably along an axis stretching from the Pays de la Loire to the Hauts-de-France, passing through the Île-de-France.
The situation therefore remains to be closely monitored in the coming hours.
