A beach like no other
Located on the northeast coast of Groix Island, Grand-Sables Beach stands out first and foremost because of its shape. While most beaches curve in a crescent shape toward the shore, this one features a convex form oriented toward the open sea. An extremely rare characteristic in Europe that already gives it quite a spectacular silhouette when viewed from the heights of the island. But that's not the only phenomenon that makes Grand-Sables so amazing.
This beach moves naturally
The most surprising part is probably hiding beneath the sand. Grands-Sables Beach is what's known as a "mobile" beach: its sandbank gradually shifts due to the action of marine currents, swells, and storms. Over time, its location can therefore change. The phenomenon is quite remarkable: according to the municipality of Groix, the beach has already moved nearly 160 meters in just two years. In other words, the landscape you discover today isn't necessarily exactly the same one you'll find in a few weeks.
Why does the sand move so much?
This amazing mobility is largely explained by the particular configuration of currents around the island. Marine currents arrive from both sides of Groix and contribute to the permanent movement of sediments. The sand is transported and then redeposited elsewhere, which gradually changes the shape and position of the beach. This phenom
undergoes regular scientific monitoring. Researchers from the University of South Brittany and Lorient Agglomeration observe its evolution in particular to better understand this coastal dynamic. In 2026, Grands-Sables even secured third place among France's best-rated beaches in a ranking created by Holidu based on reviews published on Google Maps. A wild setting off the coast of Brittany
The island of Groix allows you to enjoy a much less urbanized coastline than some major seaside resorts. At Grands-Sables, the landscape remains largely dominated by nature. In summer, the beach is among the most frequented spots on the icircle and swimming is supervised during the season.
