This area under close watch
Place Sainte-Anne, a historic and highly frequented spot in Rennes, is particularly affected by the presence of rodents. The new signs aim to raise awareness among residents about proper waste management and the need to avoid feeding animals, especially birds, as this food attracts rats. "We want to remind locals and shopkeepers that a simple act of negligence can quickly turn a place into a real paradise for pests," explains a representative from the city's cleanliness service.
A problem affecting many cities
Like many other French cities, Rennes is seeing its rat population grow, mainly due to the abundance of waste and numerous food sources available. The rats, enticed by food scraps and improperly placed trash, are multiplying quickly and causing public health issues. The city reminds citizens that it’s crucial to throw their waste in the bins, not beside them, to reduce food sources for these pests.
Hygiene and prevention measures are piling up
In addition to the installation of signs, the city of Rennes plans to enhance cleaning efforts and better monitor certain sensitive areas to limit rodents' access to food resources.
This awareness and prevention campaign aims to involve every resident in the fight against pests.
