A distinction that confirms the momentum the municipality has been building for several years to transform urban mobility. Even better, some neighboring municipalities are also making their mark and placing the Rennes metropolitan area among the most bike-friendly territories.
The Bike Barometer, a Citizen Indicator
Held from February 28 to June 3, 2025, the Bike Barometer survey gathered users' opinions on traffic conditions in their community. You don’t need to be a daily cyclist to participate; even residents who wish to hop on a bike in the future could share their thoughts, provided a minimum number of responses is reached (50 for large cities, 30 for smaller ones).
The respondents rated their city based on five key criteria: the feeling of safety while riding, the comfort of the journey (signage, condition of the bike paths, continuity of lanes), the municipality's efforts to improve the situation, available services like parking or repair workshops, and the overall feelings of cyclists. Each municipality received a final score based on this, translated into grades from A to E.
Significant Improvement in Rennes
In Rennes, the progress is spectacular, the overall score jumped from 3.74 (grade C) to 4.03 (grade B) in just two years. This is a wonderful acknowledgment of the policies implemented by the municipality. Their efforts haven't gone unnoticed; the municipality proudly highlights a comprehensive program to secure intersections and crossings, as well as the development of the Express Bike Network (REV), designed to function like a true RER but for cyclists. The result: between 2019 and 2024, bike traffic surged by 96% on key routes!
Rennes residents are massively adopting this mode of transportation. The neighboring municipalities shine too
The success doesn't stop at the borders of Rennes. Several municipalities in the metropolitan area and the department are showing great scores:
*Saint-Jacques-de-la-Lande: 4.15 (grade B, category Suburban municipalities)
*Le Rheu: 3.98 (grade B, category Small towns)
*La Chapelle-des-Fougeretz: 4.02 (grade B, category Suburban municipalities)
*La Mézière: 4.08 (grade B, category Small towns)
But it's Acigné that takes the crown with an impressive score of 4.37 (grade A), ranking 4th nationally in the Small towns category.
One thing is sure, in Rennes and its metropolitan area, bicycles have a bright future ahead.
