A measure for everyone's comfort

Who hasn't waited for their bus while being bothered by a cloud of smoke right next to them? To avoid these uncomfortable situations and protect the most vulnerable, such as children, the elderly, and those with asthma, the city of Rennes has decided to take a big step. From now on, bus shelters are officially smoke-free zones. The Star transport network reminds its users of the importance of "respecting each other."
This ban applies not only to bus shelters but also in public parks and gardens, on beaches, near schools, close to swimming pools, and even near libraries. In short, all of these everyday places are becoming healthier and more breathable spaces.

A hefty fine for violations

Offenders are in for a shock! Smoking in one of these places can lead to a fixed fine of €135, which is the equivalent of a parking violation or not wearing a seatbelt.

; If the matter goes to court, the bill can rise up to €750 in case of an increased fine. That should discourage the most stubborn individuals.

What about electronic cigarettes?

The question naturally arises, what about vaping? The decree No. 2025-582 of June 27, 2025, which regulates this new ban, does not explicitly mention electronic cigarettes. In the absence of legal clarification, vaping is therefore not currently affected by this measure. However, some users might consider its use a nuisance in enclosed spaces like bus stops, which could reignite the debate in the coming months.

An evolution in the air of the times

Rennes is not an exception; other French cities are gradually adopting similar measures, aiming for health prevention and improved quality of life. The goal is twofold: to reduce passive smoking and to encourage smokers to limit their consumption in public spaces.
