"Do you see my house? No, neither do I," could be the new mindset of the French, as the number of Airbnb rentals has skyrocketed. With 48,217 listings this year, it's safe to say that permanent residents are on a kind of treasure hunt to find a rental for the year!

An Unprecedented Drop in Brittany

After years of expansion (or even invasion), Brittany is finally seeing a decline in Airbnb rentals. The Côtes-d'Armor and Morbihan have even dared to close the curtains on some listings. It's clear that the locals are happy to enjoy a bit more tranquility along the coast. The numbers speak for themselves: Morbihan shows a decrease of 3.92% with 15,949 listings (yes, "only" 15,949...). On the side of Côtes-d'Armor, it's down by -1.90% (this may not change the world, but it's something).

Saint-Malo Leads the Breton Cities

Although Saint-Malo still has the highest number of rentals with 1,994 listings, it's surely to provide travelers with accommodations that offer a stunning view of the sea.

high tide chain, haha! Rennes, on the other hand, is quietly doing its part with 1,795 housing units, sneaking in just behind. Vannes and Brest are close behind because a night by the sea, even in winter, always attracts adventurers seeking to break free from the Breton grayness.

Contested figures, but revealing

Airbnb contests these figures, stating that the collection method, based on data scraping, is not reliable. However, for the CNHP, this data clearly illustrates the extent of the phenomenon, raising crucial questions about the impact of rental platforms on the local real estate market and the availability of housing for permanent residents.

The debate surrounding short-term rentals is just getting started, and the pressure on the affected cities is prompting increased vigilance regarding current and future regulatory measures. Stay tuned…
