In April 2011, Xavier Dupont de Ligonnès (XDDL for those in the know) killed his wife, his children, and their two dogs before mysteriously disappearing from the radar a few days later. Almost 15 years later, despite numerous leads and some unfounded rumors, he remains completely untraceable. So much so that many believe the authorities are chasing a ghost who has been dead for a long time. But not Bruno de Stabenrath, his best friend, who gave an exclusive interview to our colleagues at Marie France.

In 2019, he was spotted at Glasgow Airport. In 2022, he was supposedly seen in a restaurant in Cannes. In April 2024, he appears to double, being found both in Doubs and on a beach in Finistère, in the form of a… skeleton. More recently, the blogger Aquababe, aka the king of gossip on the internet, has taken on the heavy task of finding the most wanted man in France. This proves, if it were needed, that as we approach the 15th anniversary of this historic crime, the investigation is far from closed and tucked away. However, one question still remains…

A Significant Lead

When asked about this, Bruno de Stabenrath, the fugitive's best friend until 2011, is quite clear. According to him, Xav’, his long-time meticulous buddy, would never have gone to such lengths to hide the bodies of his family just to take his own life immediately afterward. If he went through the trouble of pouring a concrete slab over his victims, it’s because he wanted to give himself the chance to start a new life far away. Unfortunately, the remains were found sooner than expected, which threw a wrench in his plans. He believes that the reason he hasn’t been found yet is that he has a face that changes very easily, by cutting his hair or by letting his mustache grow.
