Look up: on the night of Thursday, March 13 to Friday, March 14, 2025, the moon will glow with beautiful shades of orange and red. It's a phenomenon as rare as it is astonishing, happening when a total lunar eclipse occurs, creating an alignment between the Earth, the Sun, and the Moon. Because of the color our natural satellite takes on, this astronomical event is commonly referred to as "Blood Moon."

A total lunar eclipse to explain the blood moon
What will happen on the night of March 14, 2025? The Moon will pass into the Earth's shadow. While we might expect it to completely disappear, the Moon will actually take on a beautiful orange hue. This color change occurs due to the refraction of sunlight being filtered by the Earth's atmosphere. Through this process, certain wavelengths of light are blocked. As a result, red and orange light gets scattered more, since it's longer, while blue light, which is shorter and more easily dispersed, becomes nearly imperceptible.

Will we be able to observe this eclipse from France?
Great news! This eclipse will be visible from France, but not in the same way everywhere. “ In Paris, we will see the entries into the penumbra and in the shadow, but not the start of the totality, as the Moon will be set. However, it will be visible in the west of Brittany ,” states the Institute of Celestial Mechanics and Ephemeris Calculation (IMCCE) from the Paris Observatory. Friends from Brittany, you are going to be lucky to witness this celestial show. And don't panic if you miss this eclipse, a second total Moon eclipse will take place this year, on the 7th.September 2025 !
