When we hear about a haunted house, we generally picture a slightly dilapidated old building tucked away deep in a forest. It's not often that we think we’d find one right in the heart of a city — especially not in a bustling capital. And yet, in Paris, there’s one, and it’s quite a remarkable one! At the end of an alley on avenue Frochot, just a stone's throw from Pigalle, behind a sturdy iron gate, stands a curious house filled with more than one mystery...

A Tragic Double Destiny

Built in neo-gothic style in 1837, the Maison Frochot is now classified as a historical monument. An honorable distinction, indeed, but it comes with another: that of being a haunted house. The legend tells that the composer Victor Massé lived there. “He contracted Charcot's disease and remained paralyzed for several years at the bottom of his bed,” recounts Jean-Jacques Giraud, the current owner of the place, on France Bleu. A sad fate, but nothing that seems unusual at first glance. Except that one hundred years later, the writer Matthieu Galey, then a resident of the house, experienced the exact same end-of-life scenario.


A Murder That Was Never Solved

Along with these two tragic fates, a murder was committed in the 1960s. The maid who lived with the owner of the place, a widow, was notably killed. It's said that her ghost still haunts the building. “There was no break-in, and nothing was stolen. The murderer was probably someone familiar, but they were never found ,” he continues. Are there actual supernatural presences in the Maison Frochot? Some are convinced, but the owner is clear: “I have never seen a ghost.
