Eternal nostalgics? Let’s dive back into nostalgia since 2025 is fast approaching. For some, this pivotal year will mark their quarter-century of existence on this planet. Yes, babies born in 2000 will definitely be turning 25, and trust us, it stings a bit to admit that! Want another reminder of getting older? Those born in 2005 will be 20. On the movie, video games, music, or technology front, many things that probably rocked your youth will also be blowing out twenty candles. Ready for a little trip down memory lane? Let’s meet back in 2005.


They turn twenty in 2025

1) YouTube

It was in February 2005 that YouTube first made its grand entrance...

the platform we all know and use today was created through the efforts of Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim. The first video was published by Jawed Karim in April of that same year and is titled « me at the zoo » (me at the zoo). This short 19-second video has now accumulated over 340 million views. In 2024, YouTube boasts nearly 2.5 billion active users, according to data from Statista.


2) The iPod nano

If today Apple is releasing the iPhone 17,In 2005, the famous brand co-founded by Steve Jobs released several types of iPods. The most notable? The iPod nano! This little device replaced the iPod mini and offers storage of 2 to 4GB. The iPod video also landed in our hands that same year. With a larger 2.5-inch screen for better readability, this player has a storage capacity ranging from 30 to 80GB. Crazy thing: the iPod can now play movies, clips, and other videos!

3) Google Maps 

Today, an essential tool, Google Maps emerged in 2005. It was first launched in the United States and Canada, then in Great Britain, before making its way to France, Germany, Spain, and Italy in 2006.

4) The Xbox 360 

Bringing back memories? Maybe you remember playing Halo 3, Gears of War, or Call of Duty 2 on the Xbox 360. This Microsoft console arrived in homes in 2005 and played a key role in the evolution of video gaming. The PlayStation Portable (PSP) was also released worldwide in 2005, a year after its launch in Japan.

6) Batman Begins 

Twenty years ago, the first film of the Batman trilogy directed by Christopher Nolan hit the big screen. Christian Bale starred alongside Cillian Murphy, Katie Holmes, Gary Oldman, and Michael Caine. Nominated 92 times for various awards, the film took home 13 awards. It was followed by The Dark Knight : The Dark Knight in 2008, and The Dark Knight Rises in 2012. 


7) Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
 

Five years after the release of the book with the same title, the movie Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, the 4th installment of the saga, hits theaters. RIP Cedric...


8) Grey’s Anatomy
 

You're not dreaming: it was in 2005 that the show you still see on television almost daily first started. Created by Shonda Rhimes, this medical series is now in its 21st season and had a total of 430 episodes as of May 30, 2024. 

8) The Office

You're not dreaming, it's in 2005 that the American version of The Office, created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, arrives on our screens, adapted from the British version. The sitcom takes us into the daily lives of the employees at Dunder Mifflin Paper Company, whose boss is Michael Scott (Steve Carell).

9) "We Belong Together"

Yes, the diva has other hits in her discography besides "All I Want for Christmas Is You". With We Belong Together, Mariah Carey managed to dominate the international charts and create an absolutely iconic Pop/R&B track. Musically speaking, 2005 was an especially grand year. Kelly Clarkson broke through with her hit "Since U Been Gone", Madonna dropped a "Hung Up" that we all know by heart, Gwen Stefani made "Hollaback Girl" a true classic, Coldplay brought us to tears with "Fix You", and Juanes had us dancing to "La Camisa Negra"… In short, 20 years later, these tunes still dance around in our heads.

10) Arcade Fire 

It was in 2005 that this group, formed in the early 2000s, was launched onto the international scene, especially thanks to their album Funeral. In 2011, they snagged the precious Grammy Award for The Suburbs.
