This is news that shouldn't surprise us anymore, yet it still delights us. On Thursday, March 20th, the report « World Happiness Report 2025 » sponsored by the United Nations was published. For the eighth consecutive year, the same country has taken the first place. With postcard-worthy landscapes, a slower lifestyle that's connected to nature, a more conscious relationship with the environment and each other, and sauna practices to ensure good health… the reigning champion seems absolutely unstoppable.

The land of a thousand sacred lakes - the happiest country in the world

It’s truly Finland that has once again claimed the prestigious title of the happiest country in the world. To establish this ranking, various criteria were taken into account such as the freedom to make life choices, generosity, perception of corruption, life expectancy, social support, and GDP per capita.

And nature seems to be the main argument highlighted to explain the success of the land of a thousand lakes. Nature is an important element of this happiness,” explained Eveliina Ylitolonen, a 23-year-old student in Helsinki, to AFP. “It seems that everyone is much more in touch with nature, socializing and coming together to form a community,” added Jamie Sarja-Lambert, a Brit who moved to Finland.

France far from the top 10

After Finland, other Nordic countries are also popular! These include Denmark, Iceland, Sweden, the Netherlands, Costa Rica, Norway, Israel, Luxembourg, and Mexico that complete thetop 10. France only manages to reach the 33rd position. Afghanistan takes the 147th and last place, due to the humanitarian crisis that's been unfolding since the Taliban returned in 2021.
