Every year, our Instagram feeds and family group chats are flooded with photos of someone enjoying a lovely vacation on one of the most popular islands in Europe. The problem with these spots is that, while they are absolutely fabulous, they are often packed with tourists from all over the world once the sunny days arrive. However, there are other islands in Europe that are just as worth the trip but are less popular and therefore less visited. Here are five of them.
Porto Santo, Madeira archipelago
Porto Santo is like a little gem of Portugal. Located about forty kilometers from Madeira, the island knows how to charm its visitors with its wonderful sandy beach.

A unique island that’s bursting with colors, this is what you’ll discover when you visit Symi. Located about 30 minutes by ferry from Rhodes, this Greek island is a paradise for all culture and heritage enthusiasts. You can’t miss Chorio, the old village situated on a hill, where traditional houses line the streets, or Yialos, the vibrant port of the town surrounded by colorful buildings. The Monastery of the Archangel Michael Panormitis and the Knights' Castle are also must-sees. Food lovers can indulge in delicious seafood and traditional mezes.

Brač, Croatia
Third largest island in Croatia, Brač is a true paradise for those who dream of beautiful beaches, cultural excursions, and delicious food. Zlatni Rat, this pointy white sand beach, is the perfect spot for sunbathing. Hikers will also be delighted by Vidova Gora, the highest peak in the Adriatic, offering a breathtaking view of the island. As for gastronomy, Dalmation cuisine is full of delightful specialties based on fresh fish and lamb.

La Maddalena, Sardinia
The turquoise blue of the water, the green of the trees… The island of La Maddalena is a gem in Sardinia. You can enjoy the Spalmatore, Bassa Trinità, or Monti d’A Rena beaches, all easily reachable by car. Life here is lively, and it’s delightful to stroll through the cobbled streets lined with pastel houses. Of course, there’s no shortage of restaurants where you can savor authentic Sardinian dishes.

Skopelos, Greece
Skopelos is an island that is part of the Sporades in Greece. It's especially loved for its lush vegetation and typical Greek architecture, adorned with stunning white houses. A must-visit for fans of the movie Mamma Mia, as some scenes were filmed at Kastani beach. Limnonari, Agnontas, or Stafilos and Velanio are equally idyllic beaches. The main town, Chora, shines as the heart of the island where you can explore museums and indulge in the rich local cuisine, abundant in cheese.
