Yes, but that’s without counting on the dozens of extra euros you’ll need to add to your cart just to bring along a carry-on bag. Towards smaller but free baggage allowed?
On June 24, the transport committee of the European Parliament cast a favorable vote on...
; the free allowance for cabin luggage. The goal? To prevent " unjustified extra costs " for travelers, explains Matteo Ricci, MEP and one of the initiators of the bill. This topic was already brought up in 2023, but it didn't go any further at that time. According to the MEPs, travelers should be allowed to bring two pieces of luggage for free, including a small bag and a standard cabin bag. A compromise has been reached: the hand luggage must not exceed a weight of 7 kilos and a dimension of 100 centimeters.Voir cette publication sur Instagram
A Controversial Measure
On the travelers' side, the idea is nothing short of delightful, but the project hasn't received unanimous support, especially from the Airlines for Europe association. One of the arguments against it is that depending on the size of the aircraft, the number of carry-on bags allowed is limited. From a financial perspective, this could also have repercussions since it would mean that the price of baggage would be included in the flight price, thereby increasing the total ticket price.
The Italian media outlet Corriere della Sera, as reported by BFM TV, estimated that this paid option for carry-on luggage represents a benefit of 10 billion.
euros for low-cost airlines. Implementing free services would represent a huge loss of revenue. Before this measure can be put into action, it will need to be approved in a plenary session, negotiated with the member states, and validated through a vote by Parliament by this autumn.Voir cette publication sur Instagram
