The Editor

The Île-de-France countryside is brimming with delights to pick yourself. Apples, mushrooms, squash, walnuts... the autumn treats are plentiful, and it’s even more satisfying to taste them when you’ve picked them yourself. Slip on your wool jacket, grab your basket, and go be the Sunday picker!

Apples, Pears, Quinces

The Gally Picking – Saint-Cyr-l’École (78)

The timeless classic, just 30 minutes from the capital. Here, you can gather around thirty varieties of apples and pears, golden quinces, and some plump pumpkins. And if you treat yourself to some fresh juice or homemade jam while you’re there, who could blame you?

The Grand Morin Orchard – Dammartin-sur-Tigeaux (77)

A charming organic orchard where time seems to stand still. Rustic apples, juicy pears, quince for jam… all on a hillside, in a postcard-perfect setting.

La Cueillette du Plessis – Lumigny (77)

Here, we have as much fun as we do picking! You come for the apples and leave with a pumpkin and a seasonal bouquet of flowers.

Squashes, pumpkins, and butternuts

The Cueillette de Rutel – Villenoy (77)

Fields of squashes as far as the eye can see, lovely plump butternuts, and pumpkins that are just perfect for Halloween. The gardens are enormous and the harvest is guaranteed to brighten your day!

La Cueillette de Chanteloup – Chanteloup-en-Brie (77)

Every autumn, the farm celebrates the “pumpkin festival”: you can pick potimarrons, butternuts, and spaghetti squash under a golden sun.

Walnuts, hazelnuts, and chestnuts

Rambouillet Forest (78)

We venture in to pick chestnuts and hazelnuts under beams of sunlight filtering through the beech trees. Bonus: we often spot some well-hidden porcini mushrooms along the way.

Forest of Villefermoy (77)

Less known, this forest between Le Châtelet-en-Brie and Nangis is one of the best spots to collect chestnuts and fallen nuts.

Porcini, chanterelles, and death trumpets

Fontainebleau Forest (77)

This is the temple of mushroom lovers in the Île-de-France region. After the October rains, the underbrush is covered with porcini and chanterelles. Be careful, foraging is limited to five liters per person.

Access via Barbizon, Franchard, or Arbonne-la-Forêt

Marly Forest (78)

More secluded, yet just as generous: among the oaks and beeches, you'll find meadow roses and death trumpets.

Wild Berries

Black elderberry, rose hips, hawthorn… If you know how to recognize them, these berries can be found all around Paris: in the Vincennes woods, the Sceaux park, or the Sénart forest. The more knowledgeable folks use them in syrups, jams, or herbal teas. And the others just admire them, which is already pretty great! Tip: avoid polluted areas and always pick far away from the roads.

Happy foraging!
