How can you imagine a summer without the Saint-Martin Canal? It's a must-see, one of our favorite spots. As the warm evenings arrive, we amusingly observe its fauna, carried away by a hipster wave. Some people miss the old neighborhood bars, while others delight in the abundance of amazing places. At Bonbon, we've decided to share our favorite addresses with you, so you can enjoy these little moments by the water even more.

The Story of the Saint-Martin Canal

Inaugurated in 1825, the Saint-Martin Canal is the latest canal to emerge from the ground or water, and the only one located entirely within Paris. It may not rival the Seine, but it still flows through the 19th, 10th, 11th, 4th, and 12th arrondissements, where it meets the Arsenal Port at Bastille. With its nine locks and 4.5km of length, it is the smallest of the three small canals, but above all, the most famous. Adorned with Eiffel-style movable bridges, which allow for the admiration of small cruise boats, it is loved by the cinema industry. You surely remember the atmospheric backdrop in "Hôtel du Nord" (1938) directed by Marcel Carné.

And for water lovers, whether in bottles or in the canal, you can also discover this gem aboard a boat. Cruises are organized by Canauxrama and Paris Canal. A great plan to pass through the 9 locks and descend the 25 meters deep that the Saint-Martin has. So here are our must-see spots to enjoy the Canal St-Martin even more: The life-saving grocery store: Les Vergers de Lancry It is a must-visit spot on the Canal Saint-Martin, and our favorite supply point! You will find all the essential ingredients to have a good evening.In the worst case scenario, if you lost track of time and it's past 2am, you can go a bit further and head to the Libre-service Magenta at 5, boulevard Magenta. Poliakov costs around 15€, a can of Heineken is 2€, and a Délirhoc chocolate bar doesn't exceed 3€. As an added bonus, they even offer cigarette refills. At Les Vergers de Lancry, located at 53, rue de Lancry in the 10th arrondissement, you can find Canal Saint-Martin grocery store. It's open from Tuesday to Sunday, from 8am to 11pm. Now, let's talk about that neighborhood tobacco shop that we all struggle to find: La Barrique. It's a must-have for any social gathering, as no one wants to be left without cigarettes. If you're tired of being taxed for your whole pack or simply need to restock, there's no need to run around in circles. Perfect for satisfying your post-apéro hunger at the Saint-Martin canal or anywhere else. The chawarmas may not be worth the detour, but they are cheap and more than sufficient when it comes to regaining your strength. Not a fan of chawarmas? A peaceful green oasis: Jardin Villemin

Jardin Villemin is a lovely little green spot to spend the day. When the sun starts to set, all you have to do is cross the bridge to enjoy its last rays shining on the perfectly located bend of Canal Saint-Martin. Alternatively, on the other side, at 150-154 Rue du Faubourg Saint-Martin, you can also take a look at the former convent of the Récollets!

The place to choose a good book: the Canal Bookstore

The Canal Bookstore is perfect for those who have been ditched by their friends and find themselves chilling alone. A real neighborhood bookstore, it is spacious and has a cool look with its exposed beams. On the menu, novels, plays, comics, and lots of new releases. We could spend hours there, but it's even better to read by the canal in complete tranquility.
