It's the favorite sandwich of the French: the ham and butter. Born in the Halles at the beginning of the last century, Parisian workers back then would take a slice of country bread and spread it with lard, topped with leftover meat. It was then in the 1930s that it became popular, eventually becoming the most iconic French sandwich, beloved by both Parisians and travelers from around the globe. Today, we decided to test out for you the 4 best in the capital. Follow us!
Le Petit Vendôme
We start at Petit Vendôme, the sandwich haven since 1960, where Gilles, the owner, shared all his little secrets about his iconic freshly made ham and butter. According to him, there are five key characteristics to make a truly great ham and butter sandwich: a very lovely baguette (a whole half-baguette per sandwich); butter straight from a good Normandy butter maker; the quality of the charcuterie (that...
the house keeps a secret) ; and finally, generosity. And indeed, we understand why he was elected best sandwich in the world !Voir cette publication sur Instagram

Le Comptoir du Ritz
In a different style, you can savor the modern (and high-end) version of the ham-butter sandwich at the Comptoir du Ritz, which has evolved quite a bit since its creation. You'll need to budget about €15 for this flaky creation featuring 18-month aged comté cheese and old-fashioned mustard butter.

At Aline's
Finally, it's at Aline's, an old horse butcher shop from the 11th arrondissement, where we come to enjoy a magnificent, heartwarming jambon-beurre, thanks to a great selection of ingredients. Here, you'll find a Prince de Paris ham, made right in the capital (a rare delight these days) just a short walk from Aline's. It's sliced to order, right in front of us, before being wrapped up in a wonderfully crispy baguette. In short, it's easy to see why we love our jambon-beurre so much!
