What to do in case of a stolen driving license?

It was during a fun and boozy post-lockdown party that my wallet was cunningly stolen from me. Lack of time and plenty of impatience led me to delegate the steps to recover my driver's license. So, here's a little guide for all you lazy folks out there, let's get started!

And yes, more and more websites now offer to do administrative tasks for us, so let's take advantage of it.

 
1. Why request a duplicate driver's license?

If, like me, your driver's license has been stolen, lost, or damaged, you need a duplicate as soon as possible. Yes, the driver's license being the only valid official document, it is essential to legally travel on all roads in France as well as abroad, as it allows the driver and the type of vehicle they can drive to be identified.

In the event of a police check, every driver must present their driver's license. Failure to present this document can result in a first-class offense: a fixed fine of €11, increased fine of €33. The driver then has 5 days to go to the police station or gendarmerie to present their driver's license. Otherwise..., he risks a fourth class offense: a fixed fine of €135, a reduced fine of €90, an increased fine of €375, and a maximum fine of €750. 2. How to request a duplicate driver's license? The first step is obviously to go to the police station to obtain a document certifying the theft. Then, you can request your duplicate driver's license online, on the website of ANTS (National Agency for Secure Documents) - you will need to create an official account to access the website and make your request - or through a professional accredited by the government. But be careful! The prices are not fixed and may be more expensive than an online request. It is preferable to delegate this task to the services of Auto Démarches - a legal organization recognized by the Ministry of the Interior and the Treasury - which will handle your duplicate request through its services.igné!

3. What documents do you need to gather?

In order for your application to be accepted, you need to gather a few documents:

  • A request for a duplicate of the driving license from the CERFA form n°14882*01, filled out and signed in duplicate.

  • A request for the European Union driving license, which is the CERFA form n°14948*01, filled out and signed in duplicate.

  • Two original copies of the theft declaration receipt.
  • A proof of address dating back less than 3 months (home insurance certificate, telephone bill, rent receipt, valid social security certificate, tax notice, and ...c.)
  • Proof of identity (identity card, passport)

  • 1 passport-sized photo or 1 digital signature photo

  • A €25 tax stamp
  • The amount of the regional tax if you have to pay it

 
4. How long does it take to get a duplicate ?

It takes about 2 months to obtain your new driving license, but the Auto Démarches service will do everything in its power to expedite the processing of your application.
