There are places in Paris that practice the art of exoticism, where, once you cross the threshold, time seems to stand still... Ogata is definitely one of those places: this Japanese gem hidden in the Haut Marais amazes with its design and the serenity that reigns within.

Founded in 2020 by Shinichiro Ogata — a great Japanese designer —, this place brings together an intimate exhibition space, a boutique showcasing Japanese craftsmanship, a gourmet restaurant, a Japanese-style speakeasy (Shubo) where you can taste prestigious whiskies and other spirits, and a dedicated space for tea ceremonies, the Sabo. It is the latter that interests us today, as here, on Saturdays and Sundays, you can enjoy a traditional Japanese brunch like nowhere else.


Japanese tradition at the heart of brunch

You have to descend small stairs to access the best-kept secret in the house. Here, even the water flowing in the beautiful stone fountain seems to emit a different sound... The moment we are about to experience promises to be both unique and mystical. Inspired by the meal of Zen temple monks in Japan, the Asazen brunch takes us through a multitude of small dishes.: rice porridge, bowls of vegetables (cooked or pickled), miso soup, grilled fish... All of this, of course, accompanied by traditional Japanese seasonings with seaweed, sesame, and salted plums umegushi. And for something sweet, we enjoy a wagashi, a finely crafted Japanese pastry filled with beans, nuts, or chili peppers.


Food and tea pairing

The meal is accompanied by three seasonal teas and infusions prepared by the tea master at the counter, in a beautiful ballet of delicate and wonderfully choreographed movements (with incredible scents). So, as you can see, here we move away from pancakes, bacon, and eggs of all kinds to participate in a real ceremony. Everything is done with care, down to the smallest detail, and some dishes even require 24 hours of preparation. This quality comes at a price, of course, as you will have to pay €65 per person to enjoy this exceptional brunch, and an additional €20 if you wish to enhance the meal with sake.
