After the Champs-Élysées, the Place de la Concorde, and even the forecourt of the City Hall, there’s a new iconic spot in the capital that might undergo a drastic transformation. This project is led by the Rivoli 2030 association, which aims to tackle the many issues facing this area right now. On the agenda: new space division, restoration of historical elements, and massive greening.

Better coexistence among all users

Currently, using Rue de Rivoli between the Louvre and Concorde is a bit of a nightmare, whether you’re on foot, in a car, or on a

In a study released this Friday, February 14th, commissioned by the Rivoli 2030 collective from Atelier Soil, we discover various measures being considered to improve the circulation for everyone. While the main axis is nicknamed "the bike highway and has recently surpassed 3 million cyclists, it’s not to everyone’s taste, particularly pedestrians. To address this, Atelier Soil proposes the creation of a bus lane and the construction of wider sidewalks to make it easier for pedestrians to move around. And although the space for bikes would be slightly reduced (it would be “only” 7 meters), it would be much safer.

Always more green

Another main point of this study, <similar to the policy pursued by Anne Hidalgo throughout the rest of the capital : a significant vegetalization. According to the initial analyses, this has long been limited by the subway running just belowconsidering a significant transformation of the space. This situation makes rue de Rivoli a rather unbearable heat island in the summer. To remedy this, Atelier Soil simply suggests planting “tall stems, which means quite large trees at regular intervals. These plantings should be done at the level of the canopy of the Tuileries garden, along the sidewalk.

A Historic Restoration

The latest challenge: to restore the street of Rivoli to its former glory by renewing all its historical symbols, especially its famous tiles found beneath the arches, which are now in very poor condition. The numerous mosaics in the passage, which have «lost their identity», should also be revitalized. At the same time, the team has also proposed installing awnings at the arches to help better highlight the various shops that are somewhat tucked away, while also keeping things cooler during the hottest months of the year.
