A chilling survey. According to an Ifop study conducted for the National Federation of Women's Solidarity and Credit Mutuel, 24% of women have already experienced economic violence in their relationships. This alarming figure even rises to 37% among those aged 18-35. Misappropriation of money intended for household expenses, control of accounts, or inability to manage their own resources: these everyday actions create a very real hold.

The survey reveals that 12% of women have experienced direct control over their finances, and 28% of women in a relationship do not have a personal account, a proportion that is on the rise compared to 2024. All of these situations weaken their financial independence.

Consequences that lead to instability

These acts of violence have a direct impact on women's lives. More than one in two victims report struggling to meet their essential needs. Some find themselves in a situation of over-indebtedness or facing a banking ban as a result.

Many experts remind us that the issue of leaving an abusive partner is closely linked to financial resources: without personal funds, leaving becomes nearly impossible. Nearly half of the women surveyed say they could not afford housing alone if they were to separate.

Better understanding your rights and boosting your independence

To fight against this form of control, many specialists encourage the knowledge of everyday financial mechanisms: savings, taxes, investments, account management. Understanding how these tools work helps to anticipate a potential separation and prepare a safety net.

A precautionary savings, even built up little by little, is recommended to deal with unexpected events. Experts also emphasize the importance of better informing women about social assistance, which is still too unknown, that can support single-parent families or help regain financial independence.
