This report published on January 30 by the Ministry of the Interior should have been a source of joy. Indeed, for the first time since 2020, experts have noticed a 2% decrease in the number of murders at the national level. Unfortunately, in the capital, the trend is upwards regarding homicides, as well as sexual violence. And while some other forms of crime are decreasing, it's not enough to reassure us at all…
A city (far too) deadly
On a national scale, 2024 has been a good year for the fight of life against death. A clear reduction in the number of murders (a first in 4 years), and although attempts continue to rise, their growth is experiencing a significant slowdown. So, it’s a rather positive trend overall!
It seems that Île-de-France, and more specifically Paris, have completely slipped away.[1/2] Le SSMSI publie la première photographie du bilan #statistique 2024 sur l'Insécurité et #délinquance et la déclinaison départementale et régionale de ces résultats, en incluant les collectivités d’outre-mer.

Indeed, over the past year, we’ve seen a 13.2% increase in the number of homicides in the region, with a shocking 36% rise just in Paris, totaling 34 murders recorded. The same goes for attempts, which saw a 7.1% increase in IDF, and 32.6% in the capital, amounting to a total of 187 victims. These figures are even more extreme considering that, on average, since 2016, the increase in the number of murders has been around 1.6%.
Sexual violence and drugs: Paris, the capital of evil
Two other types of crime have also skyrocketed in the streets of Paris. First up, sexual violence, with more than 5800 victims, reflecting a 12.2% increase in just one year. Only 6% of the victims actually file a complaint, just to mention.
In this way, the number of people involved for drug use has jumped by a whopping 51.2%, reaching a total of 29,799 people accused.Le SSMSI publie la seconde édition de l'Atlas départemental de la délinquance enregistrée en 2024, en incluant les collectivités d'outre-mer.

To explain this historic increase, in both cases, the Ministry of the Interior mainly mentions the holding of the Olympic and Paralympic Games in the summer of 2024 in the capital. It seems that “the exceptional mobilization of the internal security forces” during the event, to ensure its smooth running, may have been at the expense of the health and safety of Parisians.
A Few Fewer Crimes
Some rather disastrous news, which we can somewhat counter by announcing a decrease in certain types of crime in Paris. Indeed, all types of theft (armed or unarmed, violent or non-violent) are down, with an average of -20%. We see the same trend p.about burglaries, but also car thefts. At the same time, of course, since Anne Hidalgo has purely and simply removed them from the streets of Paris, it’s getting complicated to steal them.

Well, we do have one last piece of bad news, because apparently, the beginning of this article wasn't enough to bring your spirits down. According to figures gathered by the ministry, the vast majority of people arrested for these crimes and acts of violence are between 13 and 29 years old. In particular, those aged 13-17 are the main perpetrators of armed robberies, violent robberies without weapons, as well as vehicle thefts.
