In recent days, cycling has been at the heart of the City’s concerns. Between the death of Paul Varry and the accident this weekend involving a cyclist and a tram, the practice of cycling and its rightful place on the streets is being questioned more and more. Nevertheless, its popularity continues to grow, making it one of the favorite modes of transport for Parisians, surpassing cars. It is to meet this demand that the region has envisioned the Île-de-France Bicycle Network (VIF for short), which would facilitate all bike travel in the area.
Bikes everywhere, for everyone
Behind the VIF network project lies a truly admirable goal: to create 11 routes across Île-de-France, bringing cycling opportunities to even more people!
e;representing more than 750 km of bike paths in total. A goal championed by Valérie Pécresse since 2020, which is progressing quite well as already a third of the roads (that’s 250 km) have been created. However, it may not be finished anytime soon, as the completion of the developments is not expected until 2030.Une Île-de-France où tout le monde peut se déplacer à vélo: voilà l'objectif du réseau express régional 🚲 #RERV que nous dévoilons. And if right now, in many municipalities, the project is on hold due to a lack of funds, the president of the region wanted to reassure everyone this Thursday, December 5. Not only is the cycling budget increasing, going from 80 to 85 million euros, but 300 million euros have already been unlocked to help the various departments cover the costs of the VIF network.
A much-anticipated first phase
First and foremost, we want to celebrate the JO effect, which has really given a big boost to this project by developing numerous bicycle lanes in and around the capital, especially to connect the different locations.

In just a few months, there will be 400 km of additional bike lanes available, allowing all Parisians to explore the region “by bicycle,” just as Yves Montand beautifully sang. The question remains whether these routes will be safe and well-adapted to prevent more tragic incidents. This is a topic that Valérie Pécresse, along with others involved in the project, has promised to take very seriously. Now we can feel reassured.
