A financial boost to help you do your shopping with healthier products? That could soon be a reality! On Thursday, February 20, a proposed law for an experimental scheme to establish a food safety net (SSA) will be examined by the National Assembly. The text submitted on October 15, 2024, is described as « an experimental law, modeled after zero unemployment territories. The aim is to create a national structure, equipped with a fund of about 30 million euros per year, to test various models», says Boris Tavernier, the ecologist deputy presenting the bill alongside Charles Fournier, to our colleagues at Ouest France

€150 per month for groceries

How would this work? A contribution system would be established based on each person's means. Everyone would then be entitled to this “social security” amounting to €150 per month.. Local authorities would then choose which establishments this money could be spent in. No more processed products or those from big chains! The goal: to help the French people eat better and locally, and support small producers. « The principle of universality is based on that of social security. With the SSA, everyone would receive an amount each month to spend in approved structures chosen democratically within the territories », explains Boris Tavernier.

An experiment already underway in several French cities

Currently, SSA schemes already exist in some cities in France. Montpellier was the pioneer, as the initiative was launched two years ago, just like &Bordeaux. Through this proposed law, the aim is not to implement the initiative on a national scale, but to allow financial support for various local experiments. In France, one in six people do not eat enough according to a 2023 study by the Research Center for the Study and Observation of Living Conditions (Crédoc).
