The Editor

A study by Preply conducted with 1,500 French people revealed the topics to avoid to keep a serene and festive atmosphere. Here’s a little guide to dodge the traps of a bad vibe.

1. Politics, of course

At the top of the list is politics, that eternal mood killer. With 55% of respondents considering it the most contentious topic, it's best to steer clear of any references to current electoral news or debates about pension reform. Instead, choose more consensus-building themes, like your travel plans or your recent culinary achievements – after all, who can resist a good homemade lasagna recipe or that revolutionary oil-free mayonnaise recipe?

2. Family Feuds

Bringing up old grudges is like waking a sleeping volcano. 41% of French people prefer to keep those stories tucked away. So, even if Aunt Jacqueline forgot to invite you to her birthday again, it's better to talk about happy memories or family traditions – who remembers the day Grandpa dropped the log on the ground?

3. War and Religion

At the table, serious subjects like war (37%) or religion (34%) can quickly turn the atmosphere into a minefield. Passionate opinions on these topics are rarely constructive between servings of turkey. Instead, why not share your latest cultural discoveries, like that series about a serial killer or that book that moved you?

4. Parenting

This topic seems harmless, but it only takes a comment about screens or homework to ignite a debate. It's to get the minds heated up. 21% of the French prefer to steer clear of the slippery slope of parental advice. They tend to favor more neutral topics, like popular board games or fond memories of Christmases past playing Monopoly until midnight.

5. Love Life

It starts with an innocent « So, any romances? » and ends with awkward silences or embarrassing revelations. While only 9% of those surveyed cite this topic as sensitive, it's wise to tread lightly, especially if your cousin just got dumped. Keep the discussions light and kind.

Discussions that Bring Us Together

So, how do you keep the festive atmosphere without stepping on anyone's toes? Talk about travels, funny anecdotes, or shared passions. For instance, share that time you totally flubbed your first yoga class or when you learned that hilarious expression in German. These authentic and positive exchanges will strengthen bonds and create wonderful memories.
