We already knew about Tonnerres, the feminist cinema club organized every month at the Majestic Bastille cinema. And now, here's a new one! This time, it won't be about feminism (well, maybe a little bit), but about drag culture. It's called Arlequeen, and it will take place at the Arlequin cinema in the 6th arrondissement, starting from October 19th. Let's talk about the drag culture cinema club. Sophie Dulac, the head of Dulac Cinemas, is a regular organizer of cinema clubs in two of her five independent Parisian cinemas - which are, to remind you, L'Arlequin, Le Reflet Médicis, L'Escurial, Le Majestic Bastille, and Le Majestic Passy. In May 2022, the first one was launched at the L'Arlequin cinema, and it was called Hurlequin, the genre film club hosted by Nicolas Martin, the producer of La.Scientific Method on France Culture and film criticism. In September 2022, it was the turn of "Tonnerres", the feminist film club led by the wonderful Elvire Duvelle-Charles, a journalist, director, author, and activist who created the Instagram account @clitrevolution. This time, the Arlequin will host a new film club called "Arlequeen", dedicated to drag culture and hosted by the drag queen Javel Habibi, whom you may have already seen at Flèche d'or in the 20th arrondissement. The first event will take place on October 19th. Currently, four drag and cinema nights are planned. The first one will be on Thursday, October 19, with, on the program, the cult film "Polyester" by John Waters (1981). The film tells the adventures of a not so glamorous family: the mother, Divine, is an alcoholic, the father runs a porn drive-in, the son has a foot fetish, and the daughter, addicted to sex, gets pregnant. The meeting of Divine with a returning playboy will shake up the precarious but real balance of this charming family. There will also be drag performances by Javel Habibi and Ruby on the Nail before and after the screening. And at each edition, new exciting encounters and surprises to discover, live on stage and on screen. The art of drag, both unifying, political, and joyful.
