Why you definitely shouldn't jump into the Canal Saint-Martin right now

When temperatures exceed 30°C, the urge to take a dip in the Seine or in the canals of Paris can be quite strong. Just look at the numerous wild swimmers we've spotted diving from the bridges of the Canal Saint-Martin since the heatwave began. But beware: these areas are neither pools nor beaches. Besides being strictly prohibited, swimming outside of designated areas poses real dangers to your safety, your health… and even your bank account!

Dangers Galore

In recent days, on a detour through one of the canals of Paris, you may have noticed groups, often young (very young), taking a plunge — often fully dressed for those less prepared!

ash; in the murky waters of the capital. The only downside is that it's not without risks. Indeed, daring swimmers often take a plunge, only to land in shallow waters filled with hard and sharp objects: bikes, branches, glass…

And these wastes aren't the only risk, as the Canal Saint-Martin is also a space often crossed by boats, and it features a number of locks, which can create strong currents and simply pull someone under. Even the plants in the area could wrap around the bodies of swimmers, preventing them from surfacing. And it’s the rescuers themselves who say that this complicates rescue operations.

A jump that can cost you dearly

On top of the risks to you (because we assure you that breaking your neck on a bike lying at the bottom of the water is not the most glorious or pleasant way to go), and for your health (after all, we still don’t know what the waters of the Seine hide in terms of bacteria), a little trip in the Saint-Martin Canal could also cost you dearly. Indeed, in France, it is illegal to swim in the canals, the Seine, the fountains, or the Parisian lakes outside authorized zones. It's not just a gentle reminder: violating this rule can lead to a first-class fine! If you break it, you could face fines of 38€! Just imagine the number of ice creams you could buy with that money... So let's hold back, resist the urge to jump into the water anywhere, and head to the pool instead!
