Both regulars at Bastille Square and occasional passersby were taken by surprise. Since yesterday, Wednesday, September 9, 2026, dozens of mysterious flags have appeared all around the July Column, in the center of Bastille Square. This artwork titled "La Re_prise de la Bastille" is actually part of Paris Design Week, which runs from September 10 to 19, 2026.

An artwork with powerful symbolism
There are countless artworks to admire during Paris Design Week, both outdoors and in museums. But the one that particularly intrigues us is the one that has taken over Bastille Square. On display from September 9 to 20, 2026, it was created by Claire and Jean-Seb, in partnership with Festival du Monde and Refashion. In total, 196 flags representing the 195 UN member and observer countries, plus one white flag, have been installed. The choice of Bastille Square was no accident: it's a symbol of history, freedom and revolution.

Raising awareness among all audiences
Each of the flags was created from used clothing, all telling a story and referencing the cultural diversity of each represented country. The artwork also aims to raise awareness about environmental issues, demonstrating that clothing can be reused and even become works of art in their own right.
Moreover, the flags will be sold at auction on the Drouot auction house website from September 9 to 20. An opportunity, perhaps, to acquire a meaningful work.
