In recent months, the capital has really been stepping up to go green. After the inauguration of the first urban forest in Paris in June 2024, the opening to the public of a section of the Petite Ceinture, the development of the Aretha Franklin garden, the plantings on the forecourt of the City Hall, and the expansion of the already huge La Villette park, a new green lung is about to come to life. It's a way for Anne Hidalgo to leave her mark. It's the capital just a few months away from its departure, no doubt about it. In any case, it's now the Place du Colonel-Fabien, at the border of the 10th and 19th, that is getting ready to unveil its new look.

A more accessible and airy place

In 2019, Anne Hidalgo announced the creation of 6 new urban forest spaces in the heart of Paris. While some of these projects have faced delays or changes since then, the one set to grow on the Place du Colonel Fabien is about to sprout soon! Indeed, the Parisian square has just undergone 11 months of transformation. A process of massive greening, which is expected to conclude between February and spring 2026 (this includes the date announced at the beginning of the work and the one anticipated given the current delays).

The goal of this project is to create a rebalanced space to give more room to gentle mobility, featuring plenty of pedestrian areas (980 m² of pedestrianized spaces) and over 400 m of bike lanes. The best part? These bike lanes will be safe, one-way, and measure over 2 meters wide. It's fantastic news for cycling enthusiasts who know that, for now, crossing this square feels like a death wish.

Plenty of greenery

While the square already boasts 41 impressive plane trees, this new project aims to significantly increase the number of plantings, with 79 new trees planned!

trees that were installed at the beginning of last December. Some Burgundy oaks, serviceberries, Siberian elms, and common hornbeams. In total, there will be 1760 m² of greenery coming to life, including 1460 m² of forest and 300 m² of planted strips.

These various measures will help create a new cooling area for all Parisians, as the current mayor promises a drop of up to 4°C during heatwaves. However, it remains to be seen whether the construction will be finished in time for Anne Hidalgo to cut the red ribbon, or if she will have to leave that honor to her successor.
