Refusal of priorities, vehicles parked on the tracks, fallen leaves, fearless pedestrians ... For tram drivers in the Île-de-France region, daily obstacles are numerous. Too many, in fact. These situations create tensions and endanger the safety of everyone—both aboard and outside the vehicles. So, to better understand these incidents and anticipate them as best as possible, a decree passed on December 27 now allows the use of front-facing cameras.
A 3-year experiment
In 2024, the Ministry of Transport recorded no less than 1,427 collisions between trams and public road users (cyclists, pedestrians, cars, etc.). These incidents resulted in at least 31 serious injuries and 10 fatalities. On the scale of the Île-de-France region, in the same p&ea
cute;riode, we counted 230 collisions, 9 serious injuries, and 1 death. A heavy toll that has prompted the responsible authorities to take action. Thus, the various operators in the Île-de-France region – namely Keolis, RATP, and SNCF – will be able to install on a voluntary basis cameras. The data, collected over 3 years, will help analyze these situations, understand the reasons for the collisions, and better train the drivers.Île-de-France : bientôt des caméras frontales sur les tramways pour comprendre les accidents

A purely analytical tool
This experiment, which will take place until June 28, 2028, will be very strictly regulated. Indeed, the cameras will be installed in such a way that they can only film traffic. This means that neither the interiors of nearby homes nor the interiors of trams will be visible, in order to preserve everyone's anonymity. Similarly, the videos will be used solely to analyze specific situations, and cannot be used for video surveillance or issuing fines, as may be the case with devices installed on certain highways or the peripheral road. In any case, we hope this measure will bear fruit in order to ensure the safety of everyone.
