It was about time! After years of campaigning and hoping to step into the 21st century, Île-de-France Mobilités (IDFM) and its president Valérie Pécresse have finally decided to take a cue from cities like London, Marseille, Amsterdam, or Lyon to allow their users to pay for their trips directly with their credit card, without the need for any sort of pass. And it should be happening sooner than expected!

Offering a real solution

Over 6 months ago, the paper ticket officially took its bow in the capital, and let's be honest, we're not sad about it!is not yet fully recovered. Fortunately, this great news could really help us turn the page. Since the end of 2025, some bus lines in the Île-de-France (including 2 that pass through the capital) are equipped with new terminals allowing you to pay for your ride directly with your card.

A revolutionary device (not really) that helps to simplify the journeys of many passengers, mainly tourists who only use public transport in a very sporadic manner. And thanks to its current success, it should be expanded to the entire bus network by summer 2026! And Mrs. Pécresse isn’t planning to stop there, developing this technology across all public transport in the Île-de-France region.

A phased rollout

Indeed, just a few months ago, the expansion of the device to the metro and RER was still up in the air, but this Wednesday, May 20, IDFM revealed that it is now happening. In total, more than 10,000 validators are set to be installed...

over 750 stations that will need to be updated, which is a project costing several thousand euros and is expected to take a few years. However, initially, Valérie Pécresse wants to focus on the lines most used by tourists, as they are the primary targets of this revolution. Because, let's be honest, if you use public transport every day, the Pass Navigo isn’t too bad!
